Berkley Gulp! Alive! Mud Minnow Croaker - Nuclear Chicken - Cold Water Lures

They often beat live bait when fishing for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, striped bass, weakfish, croaker, bluefish and many other fish. Speckled trout love Berkley Gulp scented soft baits and since their introduction to the inshore saltwater fishing market they have been catching trout like no other lure. Contrary to some rumors, however, these revolutionary synthetic baits don't actually fish themselves.

The best way to fish Berkley Gulp scented soft baits is to present them naturally so that their movement imitates the baitfish they were designed to mimic. Here are the five top Berkley Gulp soft baits for catching speckled trout and the tips that go with them to put more specks in your boat this year.

The saltwater shrimp is the champion lure of this scented bait line, and they are deadly on trout in many conditions. One powerful presentation is to fish them just like live shrimp underneath a popping cork. You can use a weighted or unweighted rig depending on the current and you don't need a jig head just a saltwater Kahle-style hook size 2/0. Toss the shrimp into likely trout territory and pop the bait just once every twenty seconds. When the trout hit your float will simply disappear, and then the fight is on.

You can also wed the saltwater shrimp to a 3/8 ounce jig head and work it off the bottom imitating a live shrimp. Let the lure hit the bottom and then hop it using your wrist to flick the rod. Allow the shrimp to sink back and let it sit for an extended pause before you hop it again. Specks come flying in to smash the saltwater shrimp fished this way, nailing the bait as it falls back after the hop.

The pogy body is the perfect scented swimbait to use when fan casting to schools of specks. Use a 3/8 or ¼ ounce jig head depending on the strength of the current and cast the pogy out. Swim the bait back to you using your wrist to flick the bait from side to side every ten seconds. Trout hone in on the movement and scent thinking they are about to strike a little menhaden. The Gulp scent means they won't let go and you'll have them in the net in no time.

The Gulp jerk shad can be worked just like a hard jerkbait. The split-tail gives it terrific movement through the water as it darts and dashes mimicking a quick baitfish. Use a 3/8 or ¼ ounce jig head and work it back to you jerk style...slow in colder water and a little faster in hot water. Alternatively you rig the jerk shad on a Carolina rig without a jig head and it works as effectively as fishing a live minnow.

The swimming mullet is a terrific hot water bait which has the most movement of any of the Gulp scented lures. Use an appropriate jig head for the current. It is the one lure of the Gulp line that works best cast out and retrieved with a steady action. The curvy swim tail brings trout running as it mimics a mullet working its way through the water column. Alternatively, you can fish it with a pull and pause retrieve using a lift of the rod tip to make the tail dance, and then letting the lure fall back to the bottom as you lower the rod. Specks will smash the bait as it falls.

Built to imitate the mud minnow, a favored prey of the speckled trout, you fish these lures slowly along the bottom. You can use a jig head or fish the lure on a Carolina rig with a 2/0 J-hook or Kahle-hook at the end of the line. Crawl the saltwater mud minnow slowly along the bottom. Speckled trout will respond to the movement and scent, smashing the Berkley Gulp soft bait from behind.
